What would you think if I said that your thyroid might need a detox?
If you’re curious to find out why and what it could mean to your health, stick with me.
Why Your Thyroid Might Need A Detox
Most of us are aware of the toxins in our environment. They are in our air, water, and food. They can also come from the inside, resulting from normal metabolism and from stress.
The thyroid gland is one organ that can be affected by various toxins. Since this gland is so important to health, is it not critical to detoxify the thyroid of any chemicals or other factors that could be impairing it?
So, what makes the thyroid toxic?
How Toxins Affect The Thyroid
Heavy metals, like mercury, lead, aluminum, and cadmium present in food, water, and some consumer products are particularly bad for the thyroid gland and the hormones it makes.
Chemicals called halogens, like fluorine in tap water and toothpaste, bromine in prepared breads and some soft drinks, and chlorine in water, interfere with iodine in the body, a mineral critical to thyroid hormone production.
There are also chemicals in the environment called endocrine disruptors, medications, and electromagnetic frequencies from cell phones and WiFi, that may interfere with thyroid function.
For more details on what makes your thyroid toxic, see an article I wrote on my website. Check the description below for the link.
And, if you haven’t already, watch my previous video about how consuming soy products might not be the best for your thyroid. That link is below as well.
Steps To Detoxify Your Thyroid
What’s to do about it then?
First, consult with a practitioner who’s familiar with the thyroid and who can assess if it needs a detox and how best to accomplish that for you.
If you do need a thyroid detox, eliminating heavy metals from the body is a good start.
Supplementing with alpha lipoic acid and Vitamin C can often be helpful for this.
For some, iodine found in kelp, eggs, and liver, can be useful for removing the halogens. Supplementing with iodine can deliver a higher dose and is often a better choice for detox purposes. But check with a qualified health practitioner to make sure you’re taking the correct amount and not overdoing it.
Of course, there are many methods of general detoxification that can benefit the thyroid. Herbs, like milk thistle and dandelion root, can assist the liver’s detox function. Nettles can help the kidneys flush out toxins and retain nutrients. Even certain fasting protocols might be helpful for some to promote detoxification.
