Acupuncture Services
Are you dealing with chronic pain that makes daily life more difficult?
Do you suffer from chronic recurring headaches or migraines?
Is chronic stress, anxiety, or depression creating too much chaos in your life?
If so, acupuncture is a solution which may help.
Acupuncture has its roots in a millennia-old Chinese tradition.
While we don’t fully understand why, modern science has proven it effective in the treatment of many modern ailments.
Let’s answer some of the most common questions about acupuncture, as well as explore how it may help you with your health concerns.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
This is by far the most frequently asked question of acupuncture. After all, inserting needles into your body sounds painful, right?
Maybe, but in this case it’s not true.
Most people consider acupuncture a painless form of treatment. You may feel a minor ache or tingle, but that’s about the worst of it.
This is partially because acupuncture needles don’t go deep enough into your skin to cause much pain. The needles are also extremely thin – much thinner than a hypodermic needle.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
As mentioned above, you may experience a light tingle or ache. This may last a few days after a treatment, but it tends to clear up quickly. You may also experience some minor bleeding or bruising. Those are generally the worst side effects of an acupuncture treatment. Let Dr. Pat know, though, if you’re currently pregnant, taking blood thinners, or are using a pacemaker. These may increase the risk.
Otherwise, acupuncture is considered to be quite safe.
How Can Acupuncture Help Me?
Acupuncture has its uses for a wide range of different health conditions.
One of its most common uses is in the treatment of chronic stress. Many describe an acupuncture treatment as relaxing, but there’s more to it than that. Studies have shown its effectiveness in helping those suffering with mild to moderate anxiety. It can be effective both on its own and in combination with other treatments, like counselling and even medication.
Acupuncture has also been proven effective as a treatment for certain types of chronic pain. In particular, acupuncture may be effective if you suffer from:
- Migraines
- Tension headaches
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Knee or elbow pain
- Dental pain
- Sciatica
If you’re dealing with an injury or illness that causes chronic pain or other difficulties, acupuncture may be able to help as well. This includes:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Tennis elbow
- Sciatica
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Fibromyalgia
If you’re currently going through cancer treatment, acupuncture has been shown to help ease the symptoms. In particular, acupuncture may help with breast cancer hot flashes, vomiting, dry mouth, and fatigue and nausea from both the disease and from chemotherapy.
Finally, acupuncture may help if you’re experiencing any of the following assorted conditions:
- Sleep problems
- Osteoarthritis
- Obesity
- Recovering from a stroke
- Drug addiction
- High blood pressure
- Low blood pressure
- Peptic ulcer
- Menstrual irregularities
- Dysentery
- Allergies
- Tourette syndrome
- Whooping cough
What Does An Acupuncture Treatment Look Like?
The first step is to perform a full naturopathic assessment. This is so Dr. Pat can better understand what your health concerns are, and whether acupuncture is the best option.
Assuming it is, you’ll lie down on your front, back, or side, depending on the area to be treated.
From there, Dr. Pat will insert acupuncture needles into the acupuncture points to be used. These needles are completely sterile, and single use.
You may feel a minor sting or tingle as the needle goes in, but it tends to be far less painful than even a hypodermic needle.
The needles will stay there for between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on your specific health complaint.
You may need a few sessions, but in general you should feel a difference after a single session.
